the process of learning a new song

when either me or my voice coach picks a new song for me to learn, i go through many different stages. i start by listening to the original artist sing the song multiple times until i have the melody and lyrics down. i don’t like to listen to the song too many times because i want to ensure i perform it uniquely. i then take the song to my pianist and we began to work together on melody. once the song is entirely nailed down and i am able to sing through it on point melodically, while keeping my personal style, i then like to print out a copy of the lyrics so that i am able to understand exactly what the song means to me. some songs are very easy to connect with, and others are a little more difficult. regardless, i study until i can find a meaningful story in the lyrics, for me personally. i practice telling the story of the song when i sing. i like to close my eyes and envision either me singing to a specific person, or memory, or even a current situation. this ensures that i am emotionally connect to what i am singing, and others will be able to hear and see that connection as well. at this point in the process, i will typically work through the song, in depth, with my vocal coach. we will pick things that need improving and spend time and time again on those areas until they are to our liking. this is about when i insert the song into a show, or performance, and see how well it goes. this is a good way of finding what you could improve on or fine tune…

and that is the process of learning and perfection a new song.
